Launch Your Health Care Career at Wayne State

Wayne State’s programs provide many paths to a career in health care. In the Life Sciences Department, you’ll develop crucial laboratory skills that are applicable to a wide variety of science and health fields. The Health, Human Performance, and Sport Department prepares students for careers in exercise science, physical education, sport management, athletic training, strength and conditioning, and other careers related to health and human performance. As a student in the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, you’ll be prepared for advanced work in the fields of mathematics or physical science (physics, chemistry, and earth science), and certain fields of health care such as medicine, optometry, pharmacy, and radiography.

Hands-on Learning in Excellent Lab Facilities

With the state-of-the-art human performance laboratory, you’ll have access to elaborate equipment designed for a variety of testing needs, including BMI and skinfold testing, and V02 max treadmills. Our facilities and equipment are used for lifestyle assessment classes, physiology labs, training practicum students, and conducting research. The lab also serves as an educational and testing facility to numerous visitors within the region.

WSC’s life sciences labs are among the best in the state and are used regularly by a range of classes to complete a rigorous science curriculum under the supervision of our distinguished faculty. The Carhart Science Building features biological, physical, and chemical science laboratories, while our human cadaver lab provides students the opportunity to learn about human anatomy and physiology beyond the books. Our new Anatomage Tables are 3D, life-sized, interactive anatomy tools that allow you to virtually dissect cadavers in addition to real human cadavers, to prepare for health care professions. The Carhart Science Building also features state-of-the-art physical and chemical science labs with cutting-edge equipment.

    Nursing Degree Partnerships

If you want to be a nurse but aren't sure how to get there, Wayne State has options. While there are several levels of nursing education and various pathways to achieve them, our nursing programs are specifically designed to help you achieve a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN). We partner with the University of Nebraska Medical Center-College of Nursing (Norfolk, Nebraska) and Creighton University to offer nursing programs and pathways that allow you to achieve your BSN in a seamless fashion.

What I liked most about studying pre-PT at Wayne State is a small class sizes. You have more the ability to learn, more hands-on. You get more attention from your professors, and it's more name to name basis, which is really nice if you have questions, or if you just need help on assignments. I really like our pre-pharmacy program here because our professors really get to know us well. And our classes are challenging and I think that'll prepare us for professional school. I decided to pursue health care because I've always been interested in pharmacy from my sophomore year of high school. And so ever since then I started doing job shadowing, and then I laid eyes on the RHOP program, and decided to apply, and then I fell in love with Wayne State. I decided to pursue a career in healthcare because a lot of my family members are involved in the healthcare scene and my sister's a PTA. So it's a really good time to see her go to Wayne State grow up in that kind of that major base and she's doing really well. I had some mishaps in high school, so going through physical therapy really drew my attention to that major. So in the applied human in sport physiology program, you have more of a lab-based setting. So all your classes are more in our activity lab classroom. So you get to kind of test the reflexes on other students. You can use the goniometer. You kind of get a more of what you'll do in graduate school. You're a little more advanced than other people since you know how to use those tools. You know how to do those certain tests and everything. So more lab-based and kind of what is going to prepare you for graduate school. After graduation from Wayne State, I plan to go on to UNMC see to their pharmacy school. Then I plan to come back to rural Northeast Nebraska, hopefully Wayne. My plans after graduation are to go into a PT graduation school either at UNMC or USD.
