I Found My Home at Wayne State

Kelsie Hupp chose the Music Education major at Wayne State because she came here for music camp and really loved the campus and the faculty. Her tour of the college and a conversation with one of her future professors helped solidify that Wayne State was the home for her.

I chose Wayne State College because I came here in high school for music camp. And I really just liked the feel of the campus and I really liked all the professors so it kind of just felt like home for me from the get go. So I came for a tour my senior year, and I got to talk to Dr. Armstrong, and just sitting there and talking to him and he was walking me through like what my classes would be like just having that one-on-one with a professor even before you even come to college here is really exciting. And it really helps you like solidify that. "Yeah, this is going to be a good place for me."

During my time here at Wayne State, I've felt really supported because all the professor's really care about your well being and they're always checking in on you. They always give you a lot of opportunities to be successful in the classroom and outside of the classroom. There's a lot of leadership opportunities too within each of the ensembles that they give you, which is really awesome. Wayne State has prepared me for my career because I've had a lot of opportunities to do things that are related to music and that have helped me grow as a student and as a teacher.

I've been teaching music academy lessons for the past year and a half I think. And that's really helped me grow more towards being a music teacher and helped me solidify that that's what I want to do all the field experience that I've been able to do has helped too and just being able to get out into schools and see like, "This is what the my career is going to look like!"

Some of my favorite things to do on campus when I'm not in class-- I like going to the Rec Center doing volleyball and basketball with my friends, going for walks on the nature trail. With my Wayne State degree, I hope to become a music teacher at preferably a smaller rural school. So I've had several scholarships that have really helped me get to graduate with less debt which is really promising when, especially since you're going to be a teacher being able to know that you're financially stable once you graduate and the affordability Wayne State is great.
