    Problem-Solver

Alix Stanley earned her degree with a double major in political science and geography while serving on the leadership team of several campus clubs, leading campus tours, and working at the local supermarket.

Along the way, she learned that her experiences in and out of the classroom were providing her with much more than a pathway to a job: Managing her time and commitments helped her become a problem-solver.

Greater opportunities, whether in programs of study, engagement, or class offerings, result in greater flexibility for students like Alix as they strive to become the next generation of problem-solvers who come here to work and get their hands dirty in pursuit of their place in society.

Alix ended her senior year with an honors project analyzing Middle Eastern politics and geography titled “The Israeli-Palestinian Two-State Solution: Past, Present, and Future”.

The result of all her hard work is an internship in Washington, D.C., during the summer of 2018 working for U.S. Senator Ben Sasse.

Being here at a smaller school, you do have the opportunity to make a lot of difference. You can be involved in a lot of things. People have different ideas, and getting to hear those ideas is a lot of fun.

Building purpose here at Wayne, it's easy because the professors tailor it to you. And the professors encourage you to think. They're not looking for just the capital of X is X. It's more what do you think about it, what have you learned from the class, and how is that going to help you? Here at Wayne, you have a lot of autonomy. That's really prevalent because if you're involved in clubs, if you're involved in organizations, you have a lot of duties that you have to do with that. So you really have to work at scheduling your time. You have to work with making sure you get everything done that you need to get done.

My favorite thing about the small campus environment is that if one person wants to do something, it's not just going to effect that one person or that one club. And if one club or one person wants to bring a speaker to campus, that's going to affect everybody. We get everybody there. Wayne State really does give me the problem solving skills, the knowledge that I'm going to need how to approach a situation and the confidence to approach future problems. That's giving me the tools and the experience to look at other problems later.
